The Starry Night

"The Starry Night," by Vincent van Gogh, is one of the best known images in the world. It was painted in 1889 during a year he spent as a self admitted patient in a lunatic asylum, as it was officially known then. It depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in France, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941. Van Gogh painted over 900 paintings in his lifetime and sold only one for about 400 francs. In 1990 one of his paintings sold for $82.5 million. read more

The Last Supper

"The Last Supper," created by artist Leonardo da Vinci, was painted between 1494 and 1498 on a wall in a church in Milan. The painting represents the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Disciples when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him. Due to the methods used, and a variety of environmental factors, very little of the original painting remains today, despite numerous restoration attempts, the last being completed in 1999. As the mural is painted on the wall, it will always remain in it's original location. read more

Sistine Chapel ceiling

Michelangelo painted several frescos in the Sistine Chapel, located in the Vatican in Italy. "The Creation of Adam," located on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, is the most famous. It was painted betwen 1508 and 1512. Michelangelo was intimidated by the scale of the commission, and made it known from the outset that he would prefer to decline. He felt he was more of a sculptor than a painter, and was suspicious that such a large-scale project was being offered to him by enemies as a set-up for an inevitable fall. He also viewed the project as a distraction from the major marble sculpture that had preoccupied him for the previous few years. As it happened, his work on the Sistine Chapel ended up changing the course of Western art. read more
