Shogun

The greatest adventure book ever written. This is the first serious book I ever read when I was 13 years old and started both my lifelong love of reading and my interest in Japanese culture. James Clavell is a 20th century English writer who wrote a number of excellent adventure stories based in Asia, including Tai-Pan and Noble House. But Shogun is the best, and the first one you should read because this story is chronologically the first in the series. Shogun is a great and gripping story on many levels. As an adventure novel about the Portuguese crew that gets shipwrecked off the coast of Japan and has to survive. About the culture of Japan in the time of the Shogunate. It's a series of great love stories, especially the one between Blackthorne and Mariko. But more than anything else this is a book about philosophy, about learning to see the world in a different way, based on a code of behavior and morals completely different than what you have been exposed to. This is the book to give your son. read more

The 12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art

This is probably the best book ever written, at least that we know of, about the business of contemporary art. Loaded with great facts and tidbits, and just as interesting as it is informative. Don’t buy any more art until you’ve read this. Highly recommended. What is shows in factual depth is the process by which high end art is actually valued; whose opinion matters and how values are manipulated by insiders. read more

CitizenFour

This documentary is about the process that Edward Snowden went through working with the Guardian newspaper to release secret US government documents that revealed large scale spying on Americans and others throughout the world by NSA and other US government agencies. The documentary reveals Snowden to be an articulate, thoughtful whistleblower, motivated by the right reasons, rather than the greed for financial gain that so often motivates whistleblowers. The revelations became front page news around the world. The title refers to a code name Snowden used. read more

Dune

We're not normally huge science fiction fans here at AM, and you'll find this is the only science fiction title we recommend thus far. But it's a great one. Herbert created a world where water is an extremely precious commodity and life to a large extent revolves around this scarcity. One would think that this is a book that would be seized on my environmentalists, especially given the pending issue of massive water shortages in the world. But the real reason to read this book has nothing to with the environment - it's simply a great romantic novel in a wild and exotic setting. The world of Dune is to a large extent a universe created in the mind of the author, based on the future, but with enough ideas from the past - like royalty based on birth - to provide reference points. read more

Bored to Death

Meet Jonathan Ames: writer, romantic, unlicensed private detective. Moonlighting from his job as a novelist and writer for a New York magazine, Jonathan is looking to jettison some heavy emotional baggage (his girlfriend just dumped him, okay?) through an unusual second career of cracking cases of missing persons, espionage and infidelity in the Big Apple. Features some big names doing very funny work; Ted Danson as a publisher and Jonathan's mentor, and very funny stuff by Galifianakis, who can now be seen everywhere but not in nearly so delightful roles as this one, where he plays Jonathan's nutcase pal. read more
