The Starry Night

"The Starry Night," by Vincent van Gogh, is one of the best known images in the world. It was painted in 1889 during a year he spent as a self admitted patient in a lunatic asylum, as it was officially known then. It depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in France, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941. Van Gogh painted over 900 paintings in his lifetime and sold only one for about 400 francs. In 1990 one of his paintings sold for $82.5 million. read more
